Travel + Baby = Worry.

MeY esterday I was a very cranky Momma. I started to worry about our upcoming trip to California in April. I love going to California to visit my family, don't get me wrong. But the traveling part is never fun. Specially now that I have a baby, I got more reason to stress. I started doing some research on helpful tips to travel with the baby. Well, I should have done that before I bought my tickets. NOT after! I read somewhere that they recommend you pay for an extra seat so you can use your car seat for the baby. Because as some of you may know, you have to hold your baby in your lap. So if you have bad turbulance, yes, YOU'RE strapped in, but the baby? They don't care! And it doesn't help that I read about these babies that die due to bad turbulance and their parents just could not hold them tight enough. See!? AUGH. The more I think about it, the more stressed I get. Have any of you mommies traveled with your baby and sat them on your lap? How was that? Any tips? My hubby was telling me I should use those front baby carriers for her when we lift off but I don't know if they'll allow that. I'm a worry freak so please help calm down my worry. Everything else, I'm ready for. I can deal with it but I don't know how I will deal with this. I just feel so guilty now. Gah!

MeOn a happy note... My BFF is arriving from California tomorrow! YES! She'll finally get to meet Sofia. She was here right before I had her. I was still on bedrest and was about to have Sofia at "any minute" but nope. I had her about a week and a half after she left. LOL Darn! She saw me all ballooned up and waddle all over the place. Bless her heart, she did everything for me while I was on bedrest. I was only allowed to get up to pee and shower. She cooked and cleaned for the hubby and me. She is truly and angel. I can't wait for her to get here! She'll be here for 2 weeks and then we'll (Sofia and I) fly back with her to California and we'll stay there another 2 weeks with family. I can't wait. I just can't wait.

  1. I'm sure you'll be fine on the plane, i rarely ever run into "bad turbulence" unless it's like, in December and snowing and thunder and lightening, which I know you dont like, but if you're leaving in 2 weeks, i doubt you'll run into those issues.
the only advice i can give, is find some way to keep her asleep, because to people who don't have, want, or ever travel with children, the worst thing is a screaming baby on a 3 hour flight. Her ears are probably gonna hurt with the change in pressure, just like anyones..

  2. Everything will be okay. I have not traveled with my baby yet, but a good friend of mine did and she had no problems. She experienced little to no turbulance and I think she was more worried about the pressure hurting her baby's ears. Which turned out to be no problem with that as well. This may turn out to be a pleasurable experience for you as well as Sofia.

  3. I don't have a baby now (LOL) but as a deaf person who has bad pain in her ears on flights (my ears close up and open again several hours later after getting on the ground) my suggestion is, don't feed Sofia too much before you get on board. Since you have a child, you will board before everyone else. (Families and handicapped passengers go first). Once the plane is taxiing for take-off, try and get Sofia to eat. I'm figuring she won't take a bottle?? If not then cover yourself and nurse her. Keep her occupied on bottle or breast and then when she's done, if she fusses due to her ears, try a paci. You can give her a bit of baby aspirin too. Who knows, that might make her sleep for a couple hours. That's the only advice I can give about her ears. As for the car seat, the last flight I was on in '06, the car seats I saw had to be strapped into the seat, just like in a car--facing the seat back--and the children were all strapped in with the car seat straps. So--the car seat is strapped in tight with the seat strap and the car seat straps that go over the shoulder and around will keep Sofia in. As far as I know, no one had any problems with their car seats.

  4. Also forgot to add (sorry) IF you feel that the pressure in your ears is really bad, then it's bad for Sofia. It doesn't happen often, but the cabin pressure is sometimes off. It can be adjusted by the pilot after the jet's in the air. Just ask a flight attendant if she/he can ask if the pressure is adjusted. You may be told it's already adjusted, but you can check. Sometimes a small adjustment is all that's needed.

  5. I can't really give any advice on the flying thing, because I've never been on a plane! I'm too scared.

Sounds like you have a great best friend. Wish I could meet someone like her.

  6. I have flown all over the world with my girls and it will be ok. Even better because you WILL have Andrea, that extra set of hands. I have flown with Monique as a lap baby. Once the plane was loaded I would ask if there were any empty seats and move so I could have one. I did buy a seat a few times. I had Mo and Sophia and one set of hands so it was nice to strap Sophia in. But a pain in the ars to lug that car seat! lol So she will be fine on ur lap. I never in all my years of flying hit turbulence. And she is at the best age because she wants to be held. Once they start to cruise you will have to get her a seat so you can restrain her! lol I can just see her running up and down the isle! lmbo

  7. Ay Tocayita, don't worry...I'm sure everything will work out. Great advise you've gotten so far. I wouldn't know what it's like to travel with babies...but I do know that my sis usually gives her kids some "good-night juice" when traveling! LOL!!! Dramamine for kids, that usually does the trick. Well, good luck and just think positive!! **Hugs**

  8. Cross your fingers that the plane wont be full, then move to another seat that has an empty seat next to it.

I hope it works out. It will be okay. The flight attendants are so nice and helpful.

    XOXO

  11. From what I hear of your friend, I'm sure she'll be an even greater help with you on the plane with the baby so don't stress!

I'm happy for you that you get to see your friend & you get to go visit your family as well.

You look so beautiful pregnant! I hope to look as cute for when my day comes.

  12. take a search and look for the harnesses specially made for this. i could swear that i saw one that is like a seatbelt for your child which is attached to you just for plane rides.

  13. My sister-in-law flies with her babies. When they are little like Sophia she keeps them in the Baby Bjorn thingie. The baby is easy in and easy out for feedings, playtime, and turbulance. Plus it leaves your hands free for diaper bag, purse, and other carry-ons.

The car seat gets put under the plane with the rest of the luggage. If you use just the rear facing carrier you can let it go through as is, or if you take the base with then pop them into a large oversized garbage bag with your name/address/other info on them...and ta da! Safe Sophia when you get to your destination.

Have a great visit with your friend and a great trip to California!
