The inner NERD in me.

MeT his weekend, Hubby and I decided to turn it into an "80's Movies" watching weekend. We went over the movie rental place and walked every aisle and hunted down 80's movies. One of the many we rented was, "Revenge of the Nerds". Part one and part two. I'd never seen them before. I had heard of them! But never sat down and watched the movies. I just didn't care for them at the time. LOL Anyway... both were hilarious. Have you guys ever watched these movies? I recommend them. They're funny. LOL Stupid funny. But funny non-the-less! Watching it, reminded me of high school. How people are so mean to people who aren't considered "cool" or "popular". It reminded me of me!

MeWhen I was in high school, I was not one of the popular gals. I was considered "too nerdy" to qualify, I'm sure! LOL I didn't dress the way the other kids did. I didn't have the best clothes. And when I say "best" I mean the latest trend, ya know? When we were little, Mom couldn't afford to keep up with the latest trends for us kids. So a lot of the time, we got "second hand" clothes. Each year, a friend she knew would get the clothes his "rich" friends would get rid of each year and give them to us. I remember Mom coming home with about 6 HUMONGOUS bags full of clothes. And we each got to go through them and pick what we wanted. If it didn't fit, we'd keep it anyway because we knew we'd grow into it! LOL A lot of my wardrobe was full of second handed clothes or Mom's clothes that didn't fit her anymore! haha And that's not to say that Mom NEVER bought us new clothes... because she did. I mean it just wasn't as often as any kid would have liked! LOL Isn't it always? I just remember those things though. Maybe cause at the time I felt like, "Augh. Can't we just get some new clothes here? Sheesh!" However, I am very grateful for just having clothes to wear, period. Even though at the time I didn't quite look at it that way.

MeI don't know about you but I'm so glad those "Jr. High, and High School" days are over with. I moved around a lot when I was a kid so even though I made friends at each new schoool, I never got to build those long lasting friendships. You know those kind where you can say, "Oh, I've known her/him since we were in Elementary!" That's a big deal when you're younger. I went to three different high schools. And it always seemed hard for me to fit in with the kids in school. And as horrible as it may sound, looking the way I did, didn't make it any easier I think because kids are so judgmental in school. Aren't they? If you don't dress or act a certain way, you're not cool. It's so hard to be you when you're a kid, I think. When I was about 15 I finally came upon the realization that I just had to be me and be happy. And that if people didn't like me for me then screw them! The few friends I did make though were very cool. Even though I don't keep in contact with them anymore, I remember them all.

Check out my Sally Jeesie Raphael glasses! LOL! OMG"osh... and to think I thought they weren't THAT huge compared to other ones I'd seen. haha! I still don't know how my hubby was able to see through them and fall in love with my eyes. That's what he says anyway. He says that's the first thing he noticed and attracted him to me. I joke and say, "Maybe it was the magnification, huh?!" haha

Anyway... I hope when Sofia goes to school that it's a great experience for her. And that she doesn't experience too much of the negative stuff that we know happens. I know I won't be able to protect her from life's ups and downs. She's human. We all have to but I just hope it's not a horrible experience, that's all.

But tell me, how was Jr. High and High School for you? Do you miss it? Were you a cool "popular" kid? Or were you just one of those on the sidelines like me? LOL If you have a picture to share, link to it! I'd love to see what you looked like in your "school" days.

  1. hmmm... I was well liked. not popular, popular. I wasn't a cheerleader, but I wasn't "nerdy" either. I grew up in a really small town, and I still have the same friends from grade school. Like my friend amy that comments on my blog, we've known each other since jr high. waaaaaay back when. Thinking about it, i was that girl that the other girls would go to and ask stuff like, "does this lipgloss look good on me?" or "do these shoes match my outfit?" stuff like that. I was and still am very girly girl.

  2. I was a nerdy popular kid hehe I was in choir and drama so I had some semblance of popularity. I wasn't ugly, so the guys didn't shun me LOL High school was way better than Jr. High, but Jr. had its moments. I met my bestest friend ever there. She is now my son's godmother!

  4. I wasn't "nerdy" and I wasn't "popular" in high school. I was one of those kids that had emotional issues but didn't want anyone to know, so I picked fights a lot, and eventually everyone would say hi to me cause they were afraid I'd kick their asses if they were mean to me. Thank god I grew up.

You were totally adorable in high school.

  5. When are you getting your money? I am dying to get mine! Lol!

You were so cute! I had glasses all my life until high school. In ALL of my pics I always had glasses. One time, she let us [my twin and I] get big HUGE red ones that looked like Sally Jesse Rapheal. Lol!!

*side note* I JUST read that part about your Sally glasses after I had written that above!! Lol...

I moved all of the time. And I never had ANY close friends...I still don't. :( Except my sisters. :) But I went to three high schools too...it didn't bother me at the time, but I really wish I had more close friends.

  6. I was the one that hung around with the popular kids and the the nerds.. I made friends with all different types of people. I too didnt have the trendy clothing in the begininng but I started to work part-time at the age of 16 so I started to buy my cloths and was able to buy all the "cool" stuff I wanted. I still talk to alot of my friends.. I still live in the same town so that helps.

  7. 1st off girl u look so pretty in ur young pix. I so would of been ur friend back then! As for school. Well I did love it. I had a blast in Jr. High and HS. I had allot of fun and had many friends. I wouldn't say I was in the IT crowd though. In 7th grade I hung out with the white girls, about 8 of us. I was the only Mexican. lol Then in 8th grade I hung with the Mexican girls, about 10 of us. When I hit HS I had 4 best girl friends that I hung with. And I was friends with allot of other people, all different walks of life. Girls and boys, I got along with everybody. The only DOWNFALL is I didn't date much. I don't have a pix of me in HS on the pc. I was not Ugly but plain with glasses I guess U could say? I didn't date hard core till I was OUT of HS. That is when I BLOOMED! lol All those boys I had crushes on see me now and WISH they would of asked me out. You all can bite me! lmbo! So that's my story. It amazes me that being back in my hometown people I went to HS with recognize me. I think I look way different!

I love 80's movies! I actually watched The Breakfast Club for the first time a couple weeks ago!

  9. Whoa?!! This post takes me wayyyyyyyyyy back!!! You look adorable as a teenager!! :) I was always shy and a tomboy....ugh!!! I had major issues in Jr. since I was one of the 1st girls to develope...if you know what I mean?!! I was another emotionally jacked up kid....but I didn't lash out, I just kept it inside and was severely depressed from the age of 12 until around 18. Crazy stuff!! I too was not in the popular crowd...just chilled on the side lines. I couldn't stand all the fake chicks!? Drove me nuts how they would try too hard to fit in or be cool?!! I never gave a rats butt, I was me....take it or leave it!! LoL!! There was only one reason I beleive I was know in school for... I had super long hair that went down below my butt!! My mom never cut my hair and I was never allowed to cut my hair either....until I rebelled and chopped it off!!!!

You've inspired me to make a similar post on my bloggy... I'll post pictures there. ((Hugs))

  10. Oh man high school was some of the best days of my life. I LOVED high school and I was one of the "popular" kids but I was nice, I swear. I went to a school in a pretty upper middle class town, and een though I wasn't one of the "rich" kids I still enjoyed my time as a Musketeers very very much! I will have to search for some old school pics. Maybe do a post about it!

  11. Suni: You were so cute! You look like someone I would have been friends with. You looked friendly! I liked "friendly" people. I hated the snobs. LOL *hugs*

  12. Laurie: That's so cool that you still have your friends from way back when... that's awesome! I always remember mine. But who knows where they are now. LOL You should post pics of when you were in H.S. That would be so fun to see. =)

  13. Ann: LOL! You cracked me up. Were you a bully, little girl!? hahaha That's so funny... yeah, it's funny how we can look back on things and say that. "Thank GOD I grew up!" LOL! Like the very first pic on this post, was a picture that included 2 of my friends but I got mad at them for something so I ripped them up and kept me in the picture. LOL Thank GOD I grew up too! So silly, huh? LOL

  14. Meagan: I don't know exactly when but I believe we're all supposed to get them sometime in May/June? Not sure. You're gonna cash in! LOL You got twins! LOL

How funny about the glasses. Yeah, that's what I called mine. Sally Jesse Raphael glasses. LOL I moved a LOT. I mean, A LOT. So I hardly maintained friends. And don't feel bad. I don't have friends around here either. And we've lived here for 4 years now! LOL I hope to change that at our next duty station. Which is later this year. Gotta make friends so sofia has friends too... Gotta make the effort. =)

  15. Vero: That's cool! I wanted to work too when I was younger so I could buy my own clothing but Mom didn't let me. LOL Pooey!

  16. Stephanie: Girl... I know! We soooooo would have been friends. For sure! I had more guy friends than girl friends. I found girls were too mean. They were all about "looks" and were always jealous of other girls. I hated that. I hated to hang around with girls that talked smack about other girls because that just made me wonder. "What if they talk smack about me behind my back too?" I had girlfriends but more guy friends than anything. Yeap. LOL I hate going back to Joe's hometown because even though we went to the same high school for 2 years, I run into people I don't want to. AUGH. hahaha It's a very small pueblo!

  19. Elissa: Not all the popular kids were snobs. There were a few that actually had a heart and were nice to other "uncool" kids. I met a few in school. I'm glad it was great for you. I think if I hadn't moved around so much maybe it would have been a better experience. That's why I'm so glad we'll already have been out of the military and settled somewhere by the time Sofia hits Jr. High. =) GOSH, I can't believe I'm saying that. I still can't believe I have a daughter! LOL

  20. Well . . . I quit school in the 9th grade and went back in the 10th grade but was a year behind. I had met Ted on the telephone and he had talked me into going back to school with him in his grade.
But we were the "bad" kids.
    I mean the STONERS!!!!!
Yes! We were the ones in the parking lot between all the classes and before and after school.
I was "baked" all the time.

Thank God I grew out of that stage. Ugh!
I would love to go back and relive school and go to all the school dances and all the sports stuff.
I have never gone to one school dance. I was always at a party on friday nights or a kegger in the woods on saturday nights.

    LOL!
    I was soooooooooo bad!
And boy did I have the 80's hair do! My bang were sooooo high!

    XOXO

  21. I don't miss high school at all, but I'm glad for the experience. Although I wasn't popular, by any standard, I sure had a lot of crazy, fun friends and fun experiences. We didn't always get new clothes, either, but I had an older sister who knew how to hook up everything from clothes to hair, so that was definitely an advantage *lol*. The 80's were a great era from music, to movies, to fashion, and even politics. Long live the '80's! *lol*

    P.S.
    I had big bangs, too.

  22. Girl, you've never seen Revenge of The Nerds until NOW!!? LAWD, Ana (lol)! That's classic cinema right there! I think everyone's seen those movies at least once. Have you ever seen Fast Times at Ridgemount High?? Funny stuff. lol

  23. I'd seen bits and pieces here and there but I had never sat down and watched all of it. Never had interest. Hubby gave me the same reaction you gave me. So that's why we watched it together. Yes, I still look the same. Guess I'll take that as a compliment.

  24. I love this post! it's very interesting to see your photos & the way you saw the world as a teen. As for me, I hated highschool! there were tons of clicks & I felt like an outsider being how I never grew up in Tx as a child, but in Puerto Rico. I was in Cross Country & Track & I got some friends from there, but even then I was always casted out from the girls in the team.

I'm planning on scanning pics so you'll see a post of mine.
